Over the years, B.C. Plumbing has hired female plumbers. But owner Bruce Cohen has found it difficult to keep them, losing them to other contractors or to office work.
“I’d love to see more women in the trades,” he said. “They’re meticulous, and they’re articulate.”
He tries to recruit female plumbers, “but they just aren’t out there.” Cohen said he thinks the image of plumbing as a muscle job is off-putting.
“The truth is, it’s 90 percent skill and 10 percent strength,” he said. “I don’t need big, strong people, I need skilled people.”
